The scheme “Bharat Steel Awards” has been implemented by the Ministry of Steel, Government of India. It aims to honour organisations and individuals for exemplary performance and significant contributions to the Indian steel sector. Through this scheme, recognition in the form of awards and incentives is provided to steel companies, industry teams, and individuals contributing to sectoral growth and transformation.

  • Award includes a certificate and trophy for all winners
  • Efficiency Award: ₹1,00,000 cash prize (secondary steel producers only)
  • Innovation Through R&D Award: ₹1,00,000 cash prize (secondary steel producers only)
  • Exceptional Contribution Award (individual): ₹3,00,000 cash prize
  • Note: Large integrated steel producers (ISPs) are recognized but do not receive cash prizes
  • Total awardees: 12 across all categories

Who Can Apply (Eligibility)

  • For company/team awards: must be an Indian steel company (public or private) in active production
  • Large scale producers: crude steel capacity above 1 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA)
  • Secondary steel producers: capacity below 1 MTPA
  • For the individual Exceptional Contribution Award: must be an Indian citizen, age 25–60 years, with a Bachelor's degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, or equivalent
  • Individual applicants must demonstrate a transformative, demonstrable impact on the Indian steel sector in the past 10 years

How to Apply

Step 1: The applicant or nominating authority should visit the Rashtriya Puraskar Portal at https://awards.gov.in to access the Bharat Steel Awards nomination process. Step 2: The applicant should access the Bharat Steel Awards from the award list. The option “Nominate / Apply Now” is displayed at the top. The applicant should click on this option to proceed. A new page opens where the applicant should select “Apply Now” in to Portal. Step 3: The applicant should register the organisation or team on the Bharat Steel Awards portal by providing details such as the selected award, category, organisation name, establishment year, Public Sector Undertaking or Private status, representative or team representative details, registered email ID, mobile number, Permanent Account Number, and captcha, and then submit the application by selecting “Apply Now”.

Selection Process:

  1. The selection Committee for the awards is constituted with the approval of the Chairman, Award making Authority & Secretary Ministry of Steel, Govt. of India. The Award Making Authority (AMA) shall comprise the following members:
  • Secretary Ministry of Steel : Chairman
  • Joint Secretary, Ministry of Steel : Member
  • Two Experts from Steel industry (to be nominated by Secretary , MoS) : Member
  • Research Organizations (to be nominated by Secretary , MoS) : Member No member of the Authority shall participate in the deliberations of the AMA if he/she is a candidate of an award.
  1. There shall be a Screening Committee of Experts (SCE) constituted by the Chairman of the Award Making Authority.
  2. The Screening Committee shall scrutinise the applications & supporting documents and accept or reject applications based on the eligibility conditions and submit consolidated report of applications Award Making Authority (AMA).
  3. While considering for Exceptional Contribution Award for an exceptional and transformative contribution to the Indian Steel Sector, the Award Making authority, if deemed necessary, may consider the name of any renowned Engineer/Technologist/academician with high credentials.
  4. The composition of various selection committees, proceedings of the meetings and the procedure for consideration of the nominations, other than as detailed herein will be kept confidential.
  5. The decision of the Award Making Authority shall be final and binding on all. Canvassing in any form during the selection procedure would lead to permanent disqualification of the nominees/organization

Is the cash prize applicable to all award categories?

No. The cash prize is applicable only to Small Scale Industry (Secondary Steel Producers) and the Individual category. It is not applicable to Integrated Steel Producers.

Who selects the awardees?

Applications are scrutinised by a Screening Committee of Experts and finalised by the Award Making Authority constituted by the Ministry of Steel.
