The Scheme of "National Awards for Outstanding Services in the field of Prevention of Alcoholism and Substance (Drug) Abuse" by the MoSJE, GoI shall be applicable to Institutions and Individuals working in the field of Prevention of Alcoholism and Substance (Drug) Abuse. In order to recognize the efforts, and, encourage excellence in the Prevention of Alcoholism and Substance (Drugs) Abuse and rehabilitation of its victims, awards will be presented, once in two years starting from the year 2016, for the most effective or outstanding services as individuals as well as institutions in the prevention of abuse of: (a) Alcohol (b) Narcotic Drugs (c) Psychotropic Substances (d) Other Addictive Substances (Except tobacco and its products) e.g. cough syrups, correction fluid, etc

The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment is the nodal Ministry for drug demand reduction. It coordinates and monitors all aspects of drug abuse prevention, including assessment of the extent of the problem, preventive action, treatment and rehabilitation of addicts, dissemination of information and public education. The Ministry provides community-based services for the identification, treatment and rehabilitation of addicts through voluntary organizations. The awards (generally one in each category) will be presented, once in two years starting from 26th June 2016, which has been declared by the United Nations, as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

Who Can Apply (Eligibility)

  • Must be a non-profit organization (NGO, trust, society, self-help group, or community-based organization)
  • Must have been working in the field of alcohol and drug abuse prevention for at least 5 years
  • Must regularly create awareness about the harms of alcohol and drugs among youth through its network
  • Must actively work with addicts to address stigma and discrimination they face
  • Must support addicts and their families through treatment and rehabilitation
  • Must provide treatment facilities specifically for marginalized people in their centres
  • Must have provided training for employees on drug/alcohol-related issues
  • Must be actively networked with other NGOs and community organizations for prevention programs
  • Must be nominated by an authorized agency — self-nominations not accepted

  • Must have been working in the field for at least 5 years
  • Self-nominations are not accepted
  • Previous awardees cannot apply for the next 3 award cycles

  1. Authorized agencies register on the National Awards Portal at awards.gov.in
  2. Submit the nomination for the IRCA category in the prescribed proforma via the online portal
  3. Only online applications in Hindi or English are accepted
  4. A Screening Committee reviews nominations; a National Selection Committee selects the awardee for each category
  5. Award is conferred on 26th June each award year
