About This Scheme

This biennial national award (given every two years on June 26th) recognizes universities and colleges that have made outstanding contributions to raising awareness about alcohol and drug abuse prevention among students and youth. The Scheme of "National Awards for Outstanding Services in the field of Prevention of Alcoholism and Substance (Drug) Abuse" by the MoSJE, GoI shall be applicable to Institutions and Individuals working in the field of Prevention of Alcoholism and Substance (Drug) Abuse. In order to recognize the efforts, and, encourage excellence in the Prevention of Alcoholism and Substance (Drugs) Abuse and rehabilitation of its victims, awards will be presented, once in two years starting from the year 2016, for the most effective or outstanding services as individuals as well as institutions in the prevention of abuse of: (a) Alcohol (b) Narcotic Drugs (c) Psychotropic Substances (d) Other Addictive Substances (Except tobacco and its products) e.g. cough syrups, correction fluid, etc

The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment is the nodal Ministry for drug demand reduction. It coordinates and monitors all aspects of drug abuse prevention, including assessment of the extent of the problem, preventive action, treatment and rehabilitation of addicts, dissemination of information and public education. The Ministry provides community-based services for the identification, treatment and rehabilitation of addicts through voluntary organizations. The awards (generally one in each category) will be presented, once in two years starting from 26th June 2016, which has been declared by the United Nations, as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

Who Can Apply (Eligibility)

  • Must be a university, college, or other post-matric educational institution in India
  • Must have been actively working in alcohol and drug abuse prevention for at least 5 years
  • Must regularly create awareness about drugs and alcohol among students and youth on campus
  • Should have collaborated with state government departments on drug demand reduction policies
  • Must have motivated students to stay drug-free and supported families of addicts
  • Should have taken proactive steps to reduce availability of drugs/alcohol in the community
  • Must be networked with NGOs and community organizations for prevention programs
  • Should have incorporated drug/alcohol awareness into the curriculum
  • Must be nominated by an authorized agency — self-nominations not accepted
  • A previously awarded institution cannot be nominated again for the next three award cycles

Exclusions

  • Must have been working in the field for at least 5 years
  • Self-nominations are not accepted
  • Previous awardees cannot apply for the next 3 award cycles

How to Apply

  1. Authorized agencies (State Governments, Central Ministries, NCCDR members, District Collectors, etc.) register on the National Awards Portal at awards.gov.in
  2. Submit the nomination of the eligible educational institution in the prescribed proforma via the portal
  3. Applications must be in Hindi or English only — no other language is accepted
  4. A Screening Committee evaluates all nominations; a National Selection Committee approves the final awardee for each category
  5. Awards are presented on 26th June each award year (International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking) by the President or Prime Minister
