The “National Centre for Earth Science Studies Internship” scheme by the Earth System Science Organization, Ministry of Earth Sciences, provides various opportunities for school as well as college students to familiarise and/or pursue research on different branches of earth sciences. National Centre for Earth Science Studies (NCESS) is an R&D institution recognized for doctoral programs in science, environmental, and interdisciplinary topics, with opportunities for Ph.D. registration announced by universities. It hosts eminent scientists for scientific exchange programs and allows all campus college students to participate in the Earth Science Forum for research project presentations.

Who Can Apply (Eligibility)
- Students from recognised universities/institutes in any of these stages:
- 5-year Integrated M.Sc./M.Sc.Tech/M.Tech: 7th to 9th semester
- 3-year M.Sc./M.Sc.Tech: 3rd to 5th semester
- 2-year M.Sc./M.Sc.Tech/M.Tech: 2nd or 3rd semester
- B.Sc. final year students
- Must commit to at least 8 weeks of continuous training at NCESS
- Candidates who were previously selected but did not join cannot re-apply
Exclusions
- The candidates, who were selected for training earlier but did not join, need not apply again.
- Students must undergo at least 8 weeks of training continuously in NCESS, otherwise their candidature will not be considered.

How should interested candidates apply?
Candidates must apply in the prescribed format available on the NCESS website. Selected candidates need to bring a printout of their application forms, duly signed by the HOD of their respective department with an official seal, at the time of arrival for training.
What is the selection process?
Shortlisted candidates, approved by the Director of NCESS, will be announced on the website in the first week of May and the first week of December. The list will also mention the allocated supervisor/group and the title of the internship/training/dissertation.
Can candidates choose their supervisors?
No, supervisors and Internship/Training/Dissertation students are not allowed to select each other. A suitable supervisor will be allotted based on the applications and the applicant's research interests.
What is the duration of the internship/ training/ dissertation?
Students must undergo at least 8 weeks of training continuously at NCESS.
Are field trips allowed during the program?
Only day field trips (no overnight stay) are allowed for visiting students. Prior approval from the Visiting Students Committee and the Director of NCESS is mandatory for any field work.
Are students allowed on the NCESS campus during weekends and holidays?
Visiting students are allowed on the NCESS campus on working days only. In exceptional conditions, they may be allowed on weekends and holidays with prior approval from the Supervisor and Group Head.
What are the requirements for completing the internship/training/dissertation?
Students must deliver a 15-minute presentation (10-minute presentation + 5-minute discussion) at the end of their training/dissertation period. Post-presentation, students can get their report/dissertation signed by the supervisor and submit it to the visiting students' committee for issuing the certificate. The report/ dissertation must also be submitted to the NCESS library for future reference.
Is consent required for publishing work resulting from the project?
Yes, any publication or communication to a journal that results from the project work must have the consent of both the Guide and NCESS.
Will accommodation and transport be provided to project students?
No, NCESS does not provide accommodation or transport for project students.
Is there a fee for carrying out project works at NCESS?
No, there is no fee for carrying out project works at NCESS.
Can NCESS decline or discontinue project requests?
Yes, NCESS reserves the right to not consider any or all requests and to close or discontinue the program without assigning any reasons.
Within what time frame the visiting students have to accept the Internship/ Training/ Dissertation offer?
Visiting students need to accept the Internship/Training/Dissertation offer within 7-10 working days from the date of the offer.
What happens if a visiting student does not accept the offer within the specified time frame?
If no reply is received within 7-10 working days, the offer will be transferred to other applicants depending on the waiting list.
