Full official description
The "Establishment of Pig Semen Collection and Processing Lab" is a component under the Genetic Improvement of Pig Breeds activity of the Sub-Mission on Breed Development of Livestock and Poultry, part of the National Livestock Mission (NLM). This initiative is introduced by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India. Under this scheme, a one-time grant-in-aid up to ₹150.00 lakh will be provided as Central share to the concerned state for construction of semen laboratory, maintaining breeding boar unit. ₹30 lakh will also be provided as onetime recurring expenditure for procurement of consumables, medicines, chemicals etc. for first time processing of semen. The scheme is implemented by the State Implementing Agencies of the State Animal Husbandry Department and State Animal Husbandry Departments. Objective:
- Increase of per animal productivity through the propagation of high genetic merit male germplasm (boar semen) through artificial insemination technique.
- Reduce inbreeding in pig populations.
- Reduce ingress of sexually transmitted diseases in pigs.
Benefits
- One-time grant of up to ₹1,50,00,000 (₹1.5 crore) for constructing the semen lab and maintaining a breeding boar unit
- Additional ₹30,00,000 (₹30 lakh) for initial procurement of consumables, medicines, and chemicals
- Funding pattern: 60% central + 40% state for most states; 90% central + 10% state for NER and Himalayan states
💡 Why Startups Should Care
Government-funded semen processing labs improve artificial insemination access for pig farmers state-wide — a state-level infrastructure scheme that indirectly benefits individual pig breeding entrepreneurs through better genetics and reduced disease transmission.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the purpose of the Establishment of Pig Semen Collection and Processing Lab scheme?
The scheme aims to increase per-animal productivity, reduce inbreeding, and prevent sexually transmitted diseases in pigs by providing high-quality boar semen for artificial insemination.
Who is responsible for implementing this scheme?
The scheme is implemented by the State Implementing Agencies of the State Animal Husbandry Department and the State Animal Husbandry Departments.
What type of semen is used for artificial insemination under this scheme?
Since frozen semen technology is not effective for pigs, artificial insemination is carried out using liquid boar semen, which remains viable for a longer duration when processed scientifically.
What assistance is provided under this scheme?
Financial assistance is provided to establish semen processing laboratories at government pig farms to produce high-quality liquid boar semen for artificial insemination.
How much financial support is provided for setting up a semen processing lab?
A one-time grant-in-aid of up to ₹1.5 crore is provided for constructing the lab and maintaining breeding boars. An additional ₹30 lakh is provided for the first-time procurement of consumables, medicines, and chemicals.
What is the funding pattern for the scheme?
For most states, the funding is shared in a 60:40 ratio between the Central and State Governments. However, for the North Eastern Region (NER) and Himalayan states, the ratio is 90:10.
Who is eligible to apply for this scheme?
The scheme is open to State Livestock Agencies and the Animal Husbandry Departments of State Governments.
Can private farms or organizations apply for assistance under this scheme?
No, only State Livestock Agencies and the State Animal Husbandry Departments are eligible to receive assistance.
How does the scheme help in reducing inbreeding among pigs?
By providing access to high genetic merit boar semen for artificial insemination, the scheme reduces the chances of inbreeding, which improves the overall genetic quality of pig populations.
Why is liquid boar semen preferred over frozen semen for pigs?
Unlike large ruminants, frozen semen technology does not work well for pigs. Liquid semen, when processed hygienically, has a success rate of 60% in artificial insemination.
What kind of expenses are covered under the ₹30 lakh grant?
The ₹30 lakh grant is meant for the procurement of consumables, medicines, chemicals, and other essential items required for the initial processing of boar semen.
Is the financial assistance provided on a recurring basis?
No, the assistance is provided as a one-time grant to help set up the semen processing lab and procure initial supplies.
Where will the semen processing labs be set up?
The labs will be established at government pig farms to ensure the production and availability of high-quality liquid boar semen.
Whom should an interested agency contact for more details?
Agencies should reach out to their respective State Animal Husbandry Department for detailed guidelines, application procedures, and support.
