Full official description

A scholarship scheme by DoEPwD for students with disabilities pursuing a post-matric qualification from UGC/AICTE recognized universities, i.e. students of Class 11th, Class 12th, including Polytechnics, Post-Matriculation Diploma/Certificates and Bachelor’s Degree/Diploma in India and Master’s Degree/Diploma.

The students with the specified disabilities defined in Schedule of the "Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016" will be eligible under this scheme. This includes persons with visual, hearing, speech, loco-motor, mental retardation, and other disabilities. NOS is implemented offline by the DEPwD.

At times SwDs are deprived of harnessing their latent skills and thereby miss the opportunity. This scheme aims to support SwDs to study further in order to prepare themselves to earn their livelihood and to find a dignified place for themselves in the society as they face several barriers physical, financial, psychological, mental in pursuing studies and living with dignity.

Benefits

  • Monthly maintenance allowance for hostellers: ₹1,600 (Group 1: engineering, medicine, management, computer science); ₹1,100 (Group 2: pharmacy, law, hotel management); ₹950 (Group 3: general BA/BSc/BCom); ₹900 (Group 4: Class XI–XII, ITI, polytechnic)
  • Monthly allowance for day scholars: ₹750 (Group 1), ₹700 (Group 2), ₹650 (Group 3), ₹550 (Group 4)
  • Annual disability allowance: ₹4,000 for visual/intellectual disabilities; ₹2,000 for hearing, locomotor, or other disabilities
  • ₹1,500 per year book allowance

Who Can Apply (Eligibility)

  • Must be a student with a certified disability of 40% or more (as defined in the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016)
  • Must be pursuing a post-matric course: Class XI, Class XII, polytechnic diploma, undergraduate degree, or postgraduate degree at a UGC/AICTE-recognized institution
  • Family income from all sources must not exceed ₹2,50,000 per year
  • Must not be receiving any other government scholarship
  • Maximum two siblings from the same family can receive the scholarship (exception for twins)
  • Cannot hold another scholarship or stipend at the same time

Exclusions

Scholarship will not be given to more than two students from a family. Provided in case the second child is a twin, the scholarship will be admissible to both. A scholarship holder under this scheme cannot hold any other scholarship or stipend. If any candidate furnishes false information / document and is established as false. An action will be initiated for recovery of the amount spent with 15% compound interest thereon. Also, such candidate will be blacklisted for future and appropriate legal action can be taken. If a student has to repeat a class, he/she would not get any scholarship for that class for a second (or subsequent) year.

How to Apply

Online

Step 1: Keep ready the soft copies of the required documents. Go to http://www.scholarships.gov.in/. and click “New Registration”. Guidelines for Registration will appear. Scroll to the bottom. Read carefully the undertaking. Accept the Terms. Click “Continue”.

Step 2: A Registration Form will appear. (The fields marked as * are compulsory) Fill the details and click “Register”. Your Application ID and password will be displayed. The same will also be sent as an SMS on your registered mobile number.

Step 3: Go to https://scholarships.gov.in/fresh/newstdRegfrmInstruction Click on “Login to Apply”. Enter your Application ID and password. Type the Captcha and click “Login”. On the next screen, provide the OTP received on your registered mobile number. You will be directed to the Password Reset screen. Create a new password and confirm. Click “Submit”. You will be directed to the “Applicant’s Dashboard”.

Step 4: On the left pane, click “Application Form”. The fields marked as * are compulsory. Fill the details and upload the documents. You can either click on “Save as Draft” to complete the application later. Else, click “Final Submit” to submit the application.

Am I eligible for this scholarship if two of my siblings are availing the benefits of this scheme?

No. You won't be eligible in this case.

By when shall the scholarship become payable?

The scholarship will become payable after the student has secured admission and has started attending the classes.

Is there a validity to the scheme benefits?

The benefits are provided till the complete duration of the course.

What would be the mode of payment of the scholarship?

The payment of the scholarship will be through DBT.

Will the Maintenance Allowance be provided as lump sum or in installments?

Maintenance allowance will be given as fixed lump sum

What if there are more than one student with equal marks for the last available slot?

In such cases, the percentage of disability will be considered. The candidate with higher percentage of disability will get preference. In case there is still a tie, the age will be considered and the older candidate will get preference.

Will I be eligible for the scholarship if I fail to get promoted to the next semester?

Yes, 50% of the total slots are reserved for girl students.

Is there any application fee?

No. The entire application process is completely free of cost.

I am a renewal applicant. Am I allowed to migrate to another school during the period of the academic course?

No. Doing so may result in suspension or cancellation of the scholarship.

What if a student violates school discipline or any other terms and conditions of the scholarship?

In such cases, his/her scholarship may be suspended or cancelled.

How will the school be deciding if a student has been regular in attendance?

The criteria on the same will be decided by the competent authority of the school.

Do I need to complete the application in one sitting?

No. You can save the application as draft and continue at a later time before the deadline.

How do I track the status of my application?

You can check the same anytime by visiting the Applicant Dashboard and clicking "Track Status" in the left pane.

What should be the type and size of the documents to be uploaded?

The format should be.pdf or .jpeg. The size of each document should not be greater than 200 kb.

In what cases a Bonafide Certificate from the institute is needed?

The Bonafide Certificate is needed to be uploaded with the application in a case where the institute is located in a State/UT different from the domicile State/UT of the applicant.
