The scheme “Sukhatme National Award in Statistics” has been implemented by the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation, Government of India. It aims to recognise outstanding contributions made by individuals in terms of high-quality research work, to improve the system of official statistics in general, and to develop innovative methods for addressing challenges encountered in sample surveys, data management systems, and data integration, in particular. Through this scheme, national-level recognition in the form of a citation, shawl, and memento is provided to eligible Indian statisticians for lifetime contribution or young achiever excellence.
Ceremony Details:
- The award will be presented on Statistics Day, i.e. on 29th June every year, with an award in each of the two categories being given in alternate years.
- At this ceremony, citations highlighting the work of the awardee would be read out.
- Awardee may also be requested to take a session highlighting the significance of their work.

Who Can Apply (Eligibility)
- Must be an Indian national (any gender, occupation, or background)
- Must be at least 45 years of age as of December 31 of the year in which the award is announced
- Must not be an official involved in the selection process
- Family members of selection committee members are also not eligible
- Must be nominated/self-nominated through the National Awards Portal only — nominations via any other mode are not considered
How to Apply
Step 1: The applicant may apply through self-nomination or institutional nomination. The applicant should visit the official Rashtriya Puraskar (National Awards) Portal at https://www.awards.gov.in.
Step 2: On the award details page, select the "Sukhatme National Award in Statistics" from the award list. The option “Nominate / Apply Now” is displayed at the top. The applicant should click on this option to proceed. A new page opens where the applicant should select “Click here to Register” under the Login to Portal section.
Step 3: On the registration page, the applicant should select the registration type as Individual or Organisation, as applicable.
Step 4: The applicant should enter the required personal details, i.e., Your Name, Date of Birth, select Nominator/Applicant Type and Mobile Number, Email ID, Address and Gender. Enter Aadhaar Number. Enter the CAPTCHA displayed on the screen and click on Submit to complete the registration process.

In posthumous cases, if the person proposed to be honoured has passed away within 1 year, the award may be given posthumously.

The selection of awardee(s) will be done in four stages, as follows:
- Primary Scrutiny by the Subject Matter Division of MoSPI.
- Examination by Screening Committee
- External Scrutiny Examination
- Final Selection of the Nominee by the Award Committee
